Hancock Springs Residence

Overview
This 2,500-square-foot residence, designed from 2018 to 2020, provides a spacious two-bedroom, two-bath layout on a site with dramatic views of Robinson Peak, Goat’s Peak, and Fawn Peak. It features extensive glass areas to capture mountain panoramas and uses steel framing elements with black wood beams. The overall project includes a main house, an Airstream shed, a garage, and a tower unit inspired by classic mountain lookout structures.
Project Goals
- Maximize views through large expanses of glass
Reflect the client’s preference for visible structural components, including steel details
Integrate a separate living area with an Airstream trailer
Include a dedicated tower unit with a studio, kitchenette, bathroom, and book shelving
Create an inviting home that blends with the local surroundings
Design and Implementation
- Layout/Structural Changes:
The plan was established after several walks on the site, helping pinpoint vantage points for each interior space. A three-dimensional model and VR sessions allowed the clients to test their preferred views while finalizing design decisions. The main house includes a floating stair, a porch, a patio, and an outdoor dipping pool. - Materials and Finishes:
Structural steel and black wood beams are expressed throughout. Glass walls connect each room with the peaks outside, and dark beams contrast with the openness created by the glazing. - Key Elements:
Along with the main house, the property has an Airstream shed and a lookout tower. The tower mimics the form of historic fire lookouts, including a small kitchen setup, shelving, and a bathroom. This cohesive group of structures creates multiple ways to enjoy views of the stream and surrounding mountains.
Challenges
Designing extensive glass walls required careful planning for structural integrity and occupant comfort. Coordination of steel and wood elements called for thorough detailing. A separate tower with amenities also demanded thoughtful siting to take advantage of stream views without interfering with the main residence’s panoramas.
Outcome
The finished design places the client’s love of panoramic scenery at the forefront. Interiors feel open and bright, with steel details and wood beams adding warmth. The tower unit offers a perched retreat, and the Airstream shed supports extended stays or short-term visitors. Through site-based decisions and interactive three-dimensional modeling, the project achieves the couple’s vision of a glass-focused home with a distinctive character.
