NW Everett DADU
Overview
NW Everett DADU is a new 1,000-square-foot detached accessory dwelling located on an existing residential property in Everett, Washington. Currently in the permitting phase, it combines living quarters with a garage and extra storage. The design has progressed over nine months and works within zoning constraints on a site featuring a historic Cape Cod–style home from the 1920s.

Design and Implementation
- Layout/Structural Changes
A grandfathered garage footprint influenced the design, which measures about 14 feet wide and 50 feet in length. Adjustments were made to satisfy local setback requirements, leading to a subtle shift in the floor plan. A vaulted ceiling on the second level promotes openness, and window placement maximizes light while preserving backyard privacy.
- Materials and Finishes
Fiber cement board siding was selected for resilience and low maintenance. A small skirt around the base of the structure softens the facade’s overall scale. Windows with modern performance ratings reflect the timeless quality of the existing home without exact duplication.

Challenges
Outcome
Once completed, the DADU will supply added rental income for the homeowner, extra storage, and an architecturally compatible presence on the site. Its design respects the character of the property while providing a contemporary living space that supports the city’s broader aim of increasing housing options.
