Whidbey Island Community

Overview

This project involves a cluster of seven single-family homes, each measuring between 1,500 and 2,000 square feet, along with a guest unit and a renovated barn on a large property in Whidbey Island, Washington. The design work took place in 2017 and 2018. Each home is intended to bring people together in a shared neighborhood concept while making the most of the site’s scenic views.

Design and Implementation

The homes are arranged around a gentle cul-de-sac, with some structures set on pilings to adapt to a slope that gradually drops off to the north. Each house is designed with a private wing containing bedrooms and a public wing featuring living, dining, and a loft. By clustering homes at varied elevations, each house captures a view of the surrounding landscape while ensuring a sense of individual space.

  • Materials and Finishes

Using local, durable materials suited to Whidbey Island’s climate helped blend each structure into its rural context. Exterior elements, such as decks, were designed to be extensions of the indoor living areas, making it easier to enjoy the views. The barn is planned for renovation to host gatherings and casual events, enhancing the sense of community among residents.

Challenges
Site slopes required creative use of foundation systems to keep each residence level while preserving sightlines. Balancing a desire for privacy with the community’s communal vision meant careful planning of entry drives, shared outdoor areas, and arrival experiences.
Outcome
The Whidbey Island Community concept offers both a private retreat for homeowners and a welcoming environment for gatherings. By embracing the site’s topography and retaining existing features like the circular pad, the design supports sustainable land use while fostering a close-knit neighborhood feel.
