Overview

Zanzibar Lodge is a concept for a 5,000-square-foot bed and breakfast designed in collaboration with a local nonprofit, Give Volunteers. With projects in Zanzibar, Tanzania, it focuses on ecotourism and community-building by offering 24 bunk rooms for visitors, as well as an open-air restaurant and café on the upper level. As part of a volunteer initiative, the project aligns with Harmony Architecture’s commitment to social impact and environmentally considerate approaches.

Design and Implementation

Rooms are situated on lower levels for privacy, while a lively restaurant and café occupy the top floor. The thatched roof draws on local traditions, blending a contemporary appearance with regional heritage. Sustainably harvested wood and bamboo form the primary structural elements, allowing local tradespeople to use familiar building techniques.

Natural resources such as bamboo and regionally sourced lumber highlight the eco-friendly vision. Thatching methods common to the area are used for roofing, offering thermal comfort and cultural authenticity. Water harvesting systems and composting toilets fit seamlessly into the overall layout, reinforcing the lodge’s commitment to minimal environmental impact.

Challenges
Working with limited budgets and remote project conditions meant prioritizing locally available materials and skills. Balancing affordability, design appeal, and environmental goals demanded careful planning and creative problem-solving.
Outcome
Although conceptual, Zanzibar Lodge stands as an example of how architecture can serve community needs while respecting cultural identity. The sketches and plans energize local groups, offer a platform for donor engagement, and demonstrate Harmony Architecture’s dedication to meaningful, sustainable solutions. This process encourages investment in projects that enrich local economies and celebrate the natural setting.
