Everett Remodel

Overview

The Everett Remodel is a 675-square-foot basement upgrade in an Everett residence, completed in 2024. The project converted an old laundry closet into a kitchenette, added storage, and modernized the bathroom. Overall, it aimed to create a comfortable rental unit while improving the existing space.

Project Goals
  • Create a functional kitchenette and additional storage in the basement.
  • Introduce a new layout featuring stackable appliances and a shallow-depth fridge for better space usage.
  • Update the bathroom with a larger shower, dual shower fixtures, and expanded storage.
  • Enhance the space with fresh materials, improved lighting, and upgraded stairs.
Design and Implementation

Two months of design work preceded seven months of construction. The kitchenette was planned to accommodate stacked laundry appliances, a new fridge, a small sink, and sleek tile and countertop materials. Rift-sawn white oak cabinetry with black hardware and floating shelves brought a crisp, modern feel to the space.

The bathroom underwent a major transformation by enlarging the shower to fit two people and adding both a rain head fixture and a handheld wand for flexibility. Walls were reframed to include extra shelving, a medicine cabinet, and an arrangement that tucked away the sump pump. Heated floors, bright tile, and new lighting were selected to create a welcoming atmosphere.

The staircase was reworked with oak treads, decorative bookshelves underneath, and accent lighting for a more inviting appearance.

Challenges

Fitting a sump pump into the bathroom vanity required a creative cabinet layout for easy access. Re-routing laundry ducts to allow the upstairs and downstairs to function separately also demanded precise measurements and coordination. Throughout the project, careful attention to detail ensured appliances, plumbing, and finishes fit smoothly in the limited footprint.

Outcome

This remodel transformed a cramped basement into a useful rental space. The kitchenette and bathroom now feature generous storage, appealing finishes, and an open layout that meets modern needs. The fresh oak accents, improved lighting, and contemporary tile elevate the overall character of the home, while the upstairs laundry closet helps separate the basement unit for rental purposes.
