Sylvan Glass House

Overview

Sylvan Glass House is a 1,750-square-foot single-story concept nestled in the forests of northern California. Designed as a weekend retreat, it offers two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a spacious living-dining-kitchen area, storage space, and an outdoor garage. The goal is to create a modern glass house that merges seamlessly with the surrounding woods, allowing the lines between interior and exterior to dissolve.

Project Goals
  • Integrate sustainable strategies and a green roof for improved insulation and habitat support
  • Provide a fully open floor plan with flexible walls to emphasize the indoor-outdoor connection
  • Position the structure above the forest floor for visual impact while maintaining harmony with the environment
  • Include warm references to Japanese architecture through the use of wood and expansive views
Design and Implementation
  • Layout/Structural Changes 

The single-story plan features open spaces, large glass walls, and broad sliding panels that frame panoramic forest views. This arrangement supports fluid movement between interior rooms and the wraparound deck. The roof is designed to host pollinator-friendly plants while managing stormwater through slow drainage.

  • Materials and Finishes

The cabinets are made from rift-sawn white oak, providing a softer look than the original yellow maple. A farmhouse sink with bronze fixtures aligns with the French-inspired theme, while white subway tile and quartz counters help the small kitchen feel larger. A custom blackened steel range hood, fabricated by Evil Metalworks in Monroe, introduces a focal point that balances classic details and contemporary flair.

Challenges
Adapting a large glass envelope to conserve energy required careful planning of insulation and shading. Balancing the desire for a fully open interior with the necessity for support elements and service areas also presented coordination needs. Ensuring minimal disturbance to the forest demanded a mindful approach to grading and siting.

Rio Del Modern (Sylvan Glass House) exists as a vision of elegant simplicity, uniting eco-conscious systems with the timeless appeal of glass and wood. This concept aspires to serve as a peaceful haven where residents feel immersed in the beauty of the forest, supported by a design that preserves biodiversity and fosters close connections with the outdoors.
